Corporal G/9561 MAYNARD, Albert. 1st Btn. The Buffs (East Kent Regt.)

Maynard, Albert. DoD: 04/10/1917. Age: 34. Son of Mrs Elizabeth Maynard of East View, Horsmonden, Kent. Occ: Farm Labourer. Unit Text: 1st Btn. The Buffs, (East Kent Regt.) Cemetery: LOOS BRITISH CEMETERY.

Albert Maynard was born in Capel, Kent and following his father’s passing in 1911 moved to Penhall Cottages in Horsmonden. He enlisted at Goudhurst in November 1915 and when he was placed into the Buffs in March of 2016, his mother moved to East view in Horsmonden.

Following his training he embarked with the British Expeditionary Force for France. In June of 1917 Albert was promoted to Corporal and whilst in action in the Lens area of France was sadly killed.

He was initially buried in Corkscrew Cemetery, Loos and later reburied at LOOS BRITISH CEMETERY with full military honours.

Cpl. Maynard, of the 1st Battalion, The Buffs, was great Uncle to the children; Ray, John (“Gongey”), Ted, Eric and Gerald and nieces, Mildred, Thelma, Enid, Megan and Maureen Barham who lived at 8, Gibbet Lane Horsmonden. Enid Chappell (Barham) lives in Horsmonden with her Husband David.

Sgt. Frederick Couchman, of the 1st Battalion, The Buffs, who also fell in WW1 and is commemorated on Horsmonden’s War Memorial, was the Barham children’s uncle.
