Pte. SPRINGETT E. L/6490 1st Battalion Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment)

Pte Edgar Springett was born in Horsmonden in 1885 and prior to being enlisted was a bricklayer’s labourer for his father, Stephen.

He enlisted in 1914 and was placed in the 1st Battalion Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) who were mobilised 15th August and Edgar entered the theatre of war later that month.

Just 7 ½ months later on the 18th April, Edgar was killed in action leading to the capture of Hill 60, a German held strategic high point south of Ypres.

His body was identified by his ID disc.

It is very moving to learn that Edgar sent a letter to his wife just two weeks before he fell saying how much he was looking forward to seeing his wife Maud and his two daughters, Rose and Frances, quite soon.
